349 Maces in space

May 27, 2009 - 349 (F) Sqn congratulates Frank De Winne on his succesfull launch and wishes him the best for the rest of the OasISS mission aboard the International Space Station. Frank De Winne is, as a former 349 Squadron Commander, only the second Belgian astronaut and the only one the be launched into orbit for a second time. Over the next 6 moths he wil be part of the first six-person ISS Expedition crew. During his stay he will conduct various scientific research experiments, operate the robotic arms to dock the Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle to the ISS and assume command of the space station during the second half of his stay, a first for a European astronaut. Good luck!

Forceval

May 4, 2009 - 4 pilots (&1 support) of 349 sqn left for Beauvechain airbase in order to participate in the Forceval exercise. During one week, Belgian personnel were evaluated by an international team. Typical airborne situations were presented but even after landing, pilots were not at ease facing different threats. These evaluations normally take place once every three years so next appointment is for 2012!

Child cancer fund

thumb_news-010February 13, 2009 - 349 sqn visited the child cancer fund, located in Ghent. Five squadron members were delighted to present a check of € 3.490. This tradition began in 1996 when each squadron member started to donate € 3,49 a month. Each time the magical sum of € 3.490 is collected, a delegation is sent to Ghent to hand over the check. This was already the third time we could give such a check and with the money well spent, we are planning to continue for many more years. Visit the child cancer fund at http://www.kinderkankerfonds.be (in Dutch).
